Newsletter – February 11th

Hello OLR families,

It’s been a pretty crazy month with the weather and the need to close school for the safety of our families, but we work to make each day we are in session meaningful and vibrant!  With the upcoming mid-winter break, February will be here and gone before we know it.

A huge thank you to the Dads’ Club for putting on the amazing 3rd Annual Casino Night.  It was a beautiful event and truly a night to remember!

Another big thank you to Ms. Mazich and Ms. Zazaian for all their hard work on helping produce our wonderful Christmas performances the past 2 weeks!  Additional thanks to all the parents who worked so hard to make our Secret Santa Shop a huge success last Friday, as well as to Julian Riveria from St. Mary’s who came over as Saint Nick and delivered treats to all our students.

Lastly, if we don’t see you before the half day on Thursday, best wishes for the merriest Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year as we ring out 2018 and enter 2019 with hopes for an even better one ahead!  See you back here on January 3rd!!

In addition, a huge thank you to Mrs. McElyea and our National Junior Honors Society for putting up the beautiful Christmas decorations in front of our school to make the holidays even more festive!

Even though it’s a short week, it’s an important one, as we look to give thanks for all that God has provided for us individually and as a family.  Reminder, since there is no school Wednesday-Friday, our school mass will be tomorrow, Tuesday the 20th at 8:15. We also will be having our picture retakes tomorrow, so please have your student come ready if they are having their picture taken.  Lastly, there will be no PM latchkey tomorrow afternoon.

When we return from break, the following Friday the 30th will be November’s Mission Jean Day.  The second grade has chosen “Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis” for their charity to support. The classroom that raises the most money will win a pizza and pajama party for their class!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Newsletter – November 13th

Hello OLR families,

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, there’s a lot to be thankful for here at Our Lady of Refuge!

One thing I’m thankful for all our wonderful parents who came to conferences and helped us strengthen the partnership between home and school.  It’s only because of fantastic families that we can provide the stellar educational experience during the day!

Another is the focus on our school theme of “being kind” and how we show that to one another on a regular basis, primarily on this day being “World Kindness Day”!

Lastly, I’m thankful for the wonderful programs we are able to share with our students, like the Red Wings Assembly taking place this Friday afternoon.

Have a great week and hopefully we’ll see you either at the weekly Wednesday Mass, our Parents Club meeting tomorrow at 2 PM (Wednesday the 14th) in the Social Hall or at the Coffee Talk for parents this Friday at 8:30 in our middle school science lab!

Newsletter – November 5th

Hello OLR families,

October ended with fun filled Halloween celebrations and November kicked off with an energetic All Saints Day Mass that showcased many students dressing up to honor a Saint of their choice!  Thank you to all the students and families that so generously dipped into their candy reserves to donate to the Thanksgiving baskets through Christian Ministries! Another fantastic example of how our school shows kindness to those in need.

This afternoon is our monthly celebration of students K-5, so please be here by 2:30 if you are attending.  There is also a Dad’s Club meeting tomorrow evening at 7 PM in the Social Hall. Also, remember that we have an early release for conferences this Wednesday afternoon as well as conferences on Thursday morning.  There will be no school on Friday and picture retake day will be on Monday the 12th.

Lots of stuff happening!  Have a great week!!

Newsletter – October 29th

Hello OLR families,

What an amazing night of fun for the Trunk or Treat family event on Friday night!  All the students looked fantastic in their costumes and it seemed like everyone enjoyed the decorated cars, the DJ’s great music and the delicious food and candy.  Thank you for helping make our annual event a success!!

With this Wednesday being Halloween, there will not be our normal Wednesday mass for students.  We will instead hold mass on All Saints Day, November 1st. Remember that students are encouraged to dress as a saint or other religious figure for the morning and can change back into normal school attire after mass.

Also starting the 1st, National Junior Honor Society will be holding a candy drive for items to be included in the Thanksgiving baskets that are provided to local families through Christian Ministries.  So if you have extra candy, or want to limit your child’s sugar intake, please encourage them to donate to those in need.

Lastly, if you haven’t already, please think about using our Scrip program for your gift card needs.  These are perfect for gift giving, any birthday parties you may have, dinner out with friends or family, or even grocery shopping!  If you’re interested, just make sure that the order form and payment are returned to the office by October 31 for delivery the first full week in November.  Thank you!!

Newsletter – October 22nd

Hello OLR families,

Is it really the last full week of October?  Time really flies when things are going great, and this year is no exception!  A huge thank you to all the families who have returned their Fun Run donation envelopes by last Friday’s due date…it’s amazing to see the donation chart sitting just shy of the $20,000 mark already!  If you haven’t turned yours in yet, we’d love to get your support to try and get to our goal of $30,000.

Hopefully everyone is planning to come out this Friday for the annual Trunk or Treat event.  Please remember that the festivities begin at 5 and go until 7:30, and that the event is for Our Lady of Refuge families only.  The weather looks to be dry as of now, which will be much more fun for everyone if it stays that way!

Lastly, this Friday will also be our October Mission Jean Day.  Kindergarten and First Grade chose to have our donations go to The Coffee Bucket.  The Coffee Bucket is a coffee shop affiliated with the non-profit organization DRAW (Disaster Relief at Work) which provides relief services to communities affected by natural disasters.  Your $1 donation to wear jeans on this day will help them buy supplies that are short on or help provide travel cost for the volunteers who travel to disaster sites and help with the recovery process.  Together, we can make a difference!

Newsletter – October 15th

Hello OLR families,

It was so great to see the numerous families coming out to support all our runners last Friday for the Fun Run.  At this point, all students should have received envelopes for their donations, please have them back to school by this Friday, the 19th to be eligible for the prizes.

Even though it’s a rainy Monday, all the students looked great for Picture Day today!  Any students who forgot to dress correctly for today can retake pictures on Tuesday, November 20th.

Speaking of dress, remember that as the weather begins to get cooler, please make sure your student is properly dressed to go outside at lunch.  Beginning November 1st, the uniform policy changes to no shorts and students must have a sweater or sweater vest with their blue shirt (and tie) for Mass on Wednesday.

A few additional dates to plan for:

  • The Adult Halloween Party on Friday, October 19th
  • Mission Jean Day on Friday, October 26th
  • Trunk or Treat on October 26th
