Newsletter – March 26th

3/26/19

Hello OLR families,

It’s finally Spring and the weather is starting to feel like we’ve turned the corner from the bitter cold!  As we kickoff our 4th and final quarter, please remember that the tardy bell rings at 8 AM. Students arriving to school after that time are issued a tardy and too many tardies can result in lower grades and truancy.  Please help your child make it to school before this bell to help avoid any issues.

The following middle school students were recognized on Monday the 25th for their commitment to our theme of Being Kind and were chosen as March’s Student Leadership Award by their teacher:

Ms. Stachura:  Landon Samona

Ms. Flynn:  Vanessa Kizy and Thomas Denha

Ms. Ruppel and Mr. Hilbers:  Celia Dabish

Mrs. Embree:  Alana Basmaji

Mrs. Babcock:  Luke Jarboa

Mrs. Bowyer:  Jacob Jarjosa

This Friday the 29th will be the March Mission Jean Day, below is the reason this charity was chosen:

Beginning in Detroit in 1952, the Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan is a statewide organization dedicated to providing compassionate, personalized

support to any Michigan child, adult, or family affected by leukemia, lymphoma, or other blood related disorder. Through disease information & resources, emotional

support, financial assistance and events & opportunities for fun, the CFL currently helps more than 3,200 families maintain their quality of life while dealing with leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia, Fanconi’s anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative disorders, Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia and many other diseases.

Every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer. In the United States, childhood cancer causes more children’s lives to be lost than any other disease. The most common childhood cancer is acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In July 2018, Blakely Lindemulder (Ms. Emma Flynn’s and Mrs. Sandy Flynn’s niece) was diagnosed with ALL at the age of one. She is currently still undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the University of Michigan CS Mott Children’s hospital. First hand, the Flynn family has witnessed how overwhelmingly brutal cancer and cancer treatment is on a child as well as the entire family. To honor Blakely’s fight, as well as all families and children affected by childhood cancer, the sixth grade class will dedicate their Mission Jean Day fundraiser on March 29th to Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan.

Additional congratulations to the following 8th grade girls for making it to the final round of our Optimist speeches last week: Isabella Dimitroff, Madeline Goodman, Brooke Kouza, Sophia Shamoun, Sophia Skellett, Kamryn Winchester and Sagel Yono.  They were chosen by the teachers as the best of the 8th grade essays. More information can be found under our recent news tab.

A few last things to note…please look for your child’s report card to come home with them tomorrow, Wednesday the 27th.  An additional thank you if you are a chaperone for the 4th grade trip to Robot Garage tomorrow or the 8th grade trip to Compuware on Thursday!  And remember that there will be no AM busses all next week if you need to make arrangements.

Newsletter – March 4th

Hello OLR families,

Just like that, we’re officially into March!  Now if Mother Nature can catch up with the calendar, that would be even better.  With a long month ahead of us, there’s a few things to keep on your radar (like our Dad’s Club meeting taking place tomorrow evening at 7 PM).  First and foremost is Ash Wednesday signifying the beginning of the Lent.  We hope to see you at our school mass this Wednesday morning.  Then our 3rd grade mass will be on Sunday the 10th at 9:30, so don’t forget to set your clocks ahead that day!  Monday the 11th is Kaiser Fun Day Pictures; make sure your child gets their order ready if they are taking part in the Fun Day picture dress down. Wednesday the 13th will be a Parents’ Club Meeting in the Media Center at 7 PM and Friday the 15th is when the Fall registration is due, so please make note of those important dates. Lastly, the 3rd card marking concludes on Friday, March 22nd and our March Mission Jean day will be sponsored by the 6th grade on the following Friday, March 29th.  Lots of stuff, so if you have any questions, please contact the school office for more information.

The continued generosity of the Our Lady of Refuge community allows them to impact many more children in need!

Newsletter – November 13th

Hello OLR families,

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, there’s a lot to be thankful for here at Our Lady of Refuge!

One thing I’m thankful for all our wonderful parents who came to conferences and helped us strengthen the partnership between home and school.  It’s only because of fantastic families that we can provide the stellar educational experience during the day!

Another is the focus on our school theme of “being kind” and how we show that to one another on a regular basis, primarily on this day being “World Kindness Day”!

Lastly, I’m thankful for the wonderful programs we are able to share with our students, like the Red Wings Assembly taking place this Friday afternoon.

Have a great week and hopefully we’ll see you either at the weekly Wednesday Mass, our Parents Club meeting tomorrow at 2 PM (Wednesday the 14th) in the Social Hall or at the Coffee Talk for parents this Friday at 8:30 in our middle school science lab!
