Mrs. Engler’s class is learning about germination. The students arranged their sprouting seeds by appearance to get a better understanding of how seeds change as they germinate.
The fourth graders learned about the Day of the Dead in Spanish class. The ofrenda that they made paid tribute to their family members that have passed away while leaning about the history of Spanish culture. The middle schoolers celebrated the day by making sugar skulls. What a great learning experience!
The 8th grade had their religion retreat at Subiaco Retreat Center, a Benedictine monk house. There they spent the day in prayer, meditation, reconciliation and reflection while attending mass and having some fun as well!
Last Wednesday, Mr. Peace made his 2nd Visit to Our Lady of Refuge School.
This year Mr. Peace, following up on our school theme of BE KIND, spoke to all students in grade K-8th. Mr. Peace emphasized the need to treat everyone like you treat your best friend and that recognizing them for their heart is crucial, along with realizing how one word or action (positive or negative) can change a life forever.
He gave video examples of Duteronomy 11:12-14 as well as many others. Recognizing that the lines etched on the palms of our hands reveal the letter ‘M’, which stands for ‘Miracle’; inverted the other way, ‘W’, which stands for ‘Worthy’. His talk emphasized how each person is unique and reinforces respecting everyone’s differences both inside and out.
The world needs more human kindness, and we begin to accomplish this by appreciating those around us when we show them unconditional love, compassion, understanding & empathy.
I would like to thank Lisa Berkley and the Greater West Bloomfield Community Coalition for providing Mr. Kevin Szawada (A.K.A. Mr. Peace) to us.

Last week the 7th Grade took their annual trip to Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
The morning started off with Mass with Bishop Hanchon. Following mass they were able to learn about personal vocations, an invitation from God to follow the best path that will lead us to happiness. To wrap up a fun day the students were able to tour Sacred Heart Major seminary.
This year was extra special because the students were able to receive tours from those who they have a personal relationship with. Joseph Nannoshi, a current student’s brother, as well as Daniel Whalen, a 2014 graduate of Our Lady of Refuge accompanied them on these tours. They took us to see some of their favorite spots around the campus, as well as share some of the awesome history associated with Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

Our second graders continued their First Communion celebration at our May Crowning ceremony. May God bless them all!
The 2nd graders helped the less fortunate by packaging foods at Forgotten Harvest recently. They packaged more than 8,000 lbs. of food! It was a great way to help to fulfill their Lenten promises.
