I’m happy to announce that we are adding another Fourth Grade Teacher to Our Lady of Refuge Catholic School. Her name is Mrs. Kate Bassett, who comes to us with teaching experience at a Charter School in Chicago. Please see her information below.

We will not be splitting the class, but rather the teachers will be sharing responsibilities of certain subject areas. Mrs. Whalen will be teaching Math, English, Reading and Religion in her current classroom. Mrs. Bassett will be teaching Science, Social Studies, Reading, Handwriting and Spelling in Room 111. Therefore, all fourth grade students will have the opportunity to have both teachers, in a much smaller setting (14-15 students). This smaller setting will enable both teachers to meet the needs of all the students in their classes. All students will have both teachers throughout the day. Classrooms will still combine for Specials. This will begin on Monday, November 28th. During the first week, Mrs. Whalen and Mrs. Bassett will be teaming together to allow Mrs. Bassett to get acquainted with the students. I want to thank Father McEnhill for approving this staff addition.

A Personal Letter from Mrs. Bassett:
I am so happy to be one of your child’s fourth grade teachers for the 2011-2012 school year. I recently moved here from Chicago and am excited to be back in my home state of Michigan. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Dayton in Ohio and then attended National-Louis University in Chicago for my Master of Arts in Teaching Grades K-9. During my time in Chicago, I was fortunate to have worked as a Second Grade Teacher at the number one charter school in Illinois. In addition to teaching second grade, I have had the privilege of teaching kindergarten and first grade, while serving as a tutor for grades 2-4.

Robert Pyles,
Principal

As most parents already know, Our Lady of Refuge School has implemented an important new technology enhancement to help facilitate rapid and effective communications from the school. The new system provided by One Call Now enables Robert Pyles, our principal, and Debra Richards, our secretary, to quickly and efficiently send telephone notifications to all parents. The system supports both “information” and “urgent” message options. The value of the system was demonstrated on October 20th, when Mr. Pyles was able to send out an urgent notification to inform and reassure parents when the school experienced a loss of electrical power.

We are continuing to learn more about the system and plan to implement additional features over time. This will include the ability to use the system to provide notifications for other school activities including sports and other events. The system allows us to tailor the delivery so that messages are sent to only those parents and others to which they apply. We also plan to provide more information regarding the system on the website. This will include the ability for parents to update their contact telephone numbers.

Now that the system is launched, there is one very important item for all parents to note: The CallerID that will appear on all messages sent from the school is 877.698.3261. This is the toll free One Call Now number. When you see an incoming call from this number, it indicates the call is a notification from Our Lady of Refuge School.
