Christian Service

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Matthew 25:35

The students at Our Lady of Refuge School participate in many Christian Service Projects throughout the school year. The following are just a few of our most popular service projects:

Food Collections – every November and May students are asked to bring in food donations for our parish food pantry. These food items are given to local people in need of assistance.

Share the Bounty – after Halloween is over students are asked to donate some of their favorite candy. We find that this is a wonderful way to teach the students to give of themselves. (They worked hard getting their Halloween candy!) This candy is later used to fill Christmas stockings for children in need. We place a label that reads “Jesus is the sweetest treat” on the stocking.

Good Cheer Cards – throughout the school year students will make good cheer cards for the Seniors living in Bortz nursing home.

Birthday Boxes – these boxes are made by the students and donated to OCEF. Each box contains: frosting, cake mix, candles, balloons, a card, streamers, a prayer card and a small toy or candy. The boxes are given to those in need- so everyone can have a happy birthday!

Baby Shower- baby showers are celebrated in our classrooms throughout the year. The gifts donated will be given to the Pregnancy Help Center in Waterford and to St. Michael’s women’s group in Pontiac. These much needed gifts will help a mother in need care for her baby.

Bathing Kits – bathing kits are needed for the homeless. Our students donate the needed items and then make kits to be given to those in need. The kits are delivered to Crossroads Soup Kitchen and the Baldwin Center in Pontiac.

Advent Collection – during the Advent season students are given a small package to fill with dollars and change. The money collected is given to our Saint Vincent De Paul Society to help the local poor.

Rice Bowls – during the Lenten season students are given a small plastic bowl of rice to fill with dollars and change. The money collected is donated to the global poor who are in need of the most basic necessities: food, clean water and shelter. Last year we collected over $2,000.

Mission Jean Days- on these day’s students donate a dollar in order to wear blue jeans to school instead of their school uniform. The money collected is donated to various causes: St. Domonic’s, SVDP, Grace Center of Hope

Flower Planting – Students help plant flower seeds and flowers around the school and parish grounds. Together they help care for God’s creation and make it look beautiful in the process!
